I attended the wedding of one of my good friends last week in Denver, Colorado. Her and her husband decided to spice things up a bit with the dessert and instead of a traditional wedding cake they had a variety of over 100 donuts catered from a local donut shop. Needless to say this was a huge hit with all the guests and people enjoyed trying the exotic flavors of donuts such as my personal favorite, bacon and honey glazed.
It was refreshing to see something new at the dessert table and I was surprised to find that this trend has been around for awhile.
Weddings have changed tremendously in the past ten years and one aspect that has changed the most is the dessert. Gone are the days where weddings were limited to one giant cake. Now brides and grooms all over the world are opting for more adventurous dessert options- and we are loving the results.
Dedicate a dessert table to some of the most famous (or your favorite) traditional desserts from the country where you are getting married. This is a fun way to introduce your guests to new dishes and to learn a bit more about the culture. There is something magical about eating authentic crêpes in France or enjoying delicious chocolate con churros in the heart of Spain. You are breaking the mold by hosting a destination wedding, why not spice up the dessert options as well?
A popular option is to compile a table of your favorite sweet treats and let guests make their own plates. This is a great option for smaller weddings where space is limited, not to mention it works great to snack on all through the night. A few options that work well on these types of tables include: cake pops, chocolates, pudding cups, small pies, donuts, fresh fruit, assorted macaroons and ice cream cups.
This option also works well when you have guests with food allergies or restrictions.
These are all great options but there is nothing wrong with the traditional wedding cakes either- let’s be honest you really can’t go wrong with dessert.
